The Beach Boys, Huaraches, and Surf Culture

The Beach Boys are a pop music group formed in Hawthorne, California in 1961 who are widely considered one of the most influential bands in rock and pop music history. They have recorded dozens of Top 40 hits (including four US number one singles), many best-selling albums, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Beach Boys' song "Surfin' U.S.A." focuses on the Beach Boys' ongoing theme of Surfing:

If everybody had an ocean
Across the U.S.A.
Then everybody'd be surfin'
Like Californ-i-a
You'd see 'em wearin' their baggies
Huarache sandals, too
A bushy bushy blond hairdo
Surfin' U.S.A.

The trend for huaraches was an outgrowth of the surf and hippee cultures. The beaches of the West Coast were full of goodyear-treaded Huarache sandals, Pendleton shirts, and faded levis.
